Dumb, Dumb, Dumb

I've done a lot of dumb things in my life in my effort to get things done quickly. Yesterday, though, I most definitely found the my dumbest moment of last fall: putting my fall decorations away and forgetting my decorative pumpkins and gourds were REAL! It really stunk when I took the lid off that box yesterday afternoon! I had to take my beautiful wrought-iron-decorated-with-fall-leaves basket, which was filled with gross-gray-lumps-that-used-to-be-pumpkins, and toss it. I took out all the fall leaves and sprayed them down with lysol-that-kills-99.9-percent-of-germs-and-mold, but I just couldn't bring myself to leave them in the house. I put everything back in the bin and put the bin in the trash. And now I have to get a new set of fall leaves and flowers.

SO dumb.

Abbreviations

I love having my calendar on my phone. Sometimes, however, its small screen creates unfortunate abbreviations. Imagine my son's shock when he opened my calendar for church today and read, "Lauren plays Poo." (She actually played "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief", and it definitely was not poo.) As I said, unfortunate abbreviations!

It reminded me of the time my sister, Lia, and I went to see a movie several years ago. We were walking down the long theater hallway to our movie, and ironically enough we were discussing diet techniques. As we were walking along, we were laughing at the movie titles that had been cut off. "So, I've been riding my bike in the morning." "Ha! Superman Ret." " I've been trying not to eat after 8:00 p.m." "You've got Ma. Good one." We were almost to our movie when she stopped and said, "Is this some kind of sick joke?!?" I looked up at the sign to the movie in front of us, and it said, "Big Fat Lia." They couldn't fit that "r" on the end of "Liar". Ha! What are the chances?!? Once again, an unfortunate abbreviation.

Strange Talents

Quote of the day from #1: "Mom, if you make this sound {thhhbbbppeethh} with your mouth, it's really annoying. I'm good at annoying people." Bravo to the positive attitude but....PLEASE tell me this is a strange phase that all boys go through, and one day he will not take pride in being "good at annoying people!"

Done is Better than Perfect

Someone told me recently that this was one of her friend's mottoes; I think I'm going to adopt it. Done is ALWAYS better than perfect. If I want my bathroom clean, I will do it well. Sometimes I will do it REALLY well. Is it ever perfect down to the last spot on the wall? Never! But it gets done. And that is so much better than perfect.

I belong to a family full of people who believe that perfect is better than done. If I ask one of them to clean the bathroom, they will go at the bathtub and work for an hour, maybe two, to get every last spot. Perhaps then they will have time to think about the mirror. And sooner or later they will run out of time--at this point, the bath tub is, indeed, perfect. But nothing else is done.

So--should I be striving for perfection, or should they be striving toward completion? I don't really know. I guess it's good to have some of both in every family. :)
